Me and my staff leading a Shabbat song session at Beber Camp, 2015, with a mix of secular and Hebrew songs, and a Beber original classic too!

SONGLEADING

At Jewish summer camps, it is important to strike the right balance between Jewish songs and secular songs, and the right balance between traditional songs and new songs.

Some camps have a long tradition of singing around the campfire, singing in the dining hall, and singing songs specifically written for their camp. Other camps may lean more heavily towards cheers, dances, and playing the radio instead of live music.

My background is playing in my own original bands and projects – I’ve played on stages around the country for well over a decade as a lead singer, guitarist, and pianist.

At Beber Camp, I took my experience in rock bands and applied that to our Friday Night song sessions. Whereas it had previously focused on acoustic guitar and singing, I brought a full-band vibe to the stage. But most importantly it energized and engaged the campers. I have worked with them on music during Shabbat services and Havdallah as well.

With a knowledge of Jewish camp music dating back to my days as a camper at JCC camps, and an extensive knowledge of secular camp songs and current hits. In 2015 I worked with the music director of Perlman camp to help energize their song sessions, and I can help guide your camp’s song leader and song culture in a direction that makes sense for your particular goals as well!
